Manchester Metropolitan University has said it is offering accommodation to students affected by the Bolton fire.

The announcement arrived yesterday in an email sent by Student Living to all students staying in MMU accommodation, which said the university has “made an offer” to Bolton University “to house any students that need accommodation”.

It comes after The Cube, a six-storey block of flats at Bolton University home to 211 students, was destroyed by a fire on Friday night.

The email read: “As I am sure you have all seen in the news over the weekend there has been a fire in student accommodation in Bolton. This has had an impact on a large number of students at Bolton University who will need help and support going forward.

“Here at Manchester Metropolitan Student Living, we are working with our colleagues in the Students Union and looking to support the effected [sic] students in Bolton. We have made an offer to house any students that need accommodation to Bolton University and working [sic] with them to help where required.”

MMU is also collecting donations for students affected by the fire, including warm clothing, rucksacks, hair straighteners, hot drinks and cleaning products – items specifically requested by the Student Union at Bolton University. Collections will be taking place on campus at All Saints and Birley.

Student Living has asked students to donate to a Just Giving page, which was set up in aid of those affected by the fire. The fund has already raised over £14,000 of its £100,000 target.

A spokesperson from MMU’s accommodation team told aAh! Magazine: “We’re still waiting to hear from Bolton to see how students will be allocated. We’ll be viewing the accommodation and make sure that it’s suitable.”

They say they contacted Bolton University on Saturday about the offer, and that the accommodation offered will be where the university has availability.

This article was amended on 21/11/19 to remove the statement that housing offered by Manchester Metropolitan University will be free. No agreement regarding price has yet been made, according to the MMU accommodation team.
