Theresa May set to become new Conservative Prime Minister

0 138

Theresa May is set to become the new Conservative Prime Minister as her opponent for the position Andrea Leadsom steps down.

May has been the home secretary since 2010 and recently backed staying within the European Union.

Leadsom, who promoted leaving the European Union stated that the UK “needed a strong and stable government” and that Theresa May was “ideally placed” to begin to enact Brexit in the coming years.

A source close to Leadsom stated she conceded due to the pressure from the media and that “the abuse has been too great.”

Leadsom has thanked the 84 colleagues who supported her leadership bid, saying she was “incredibly grateful.”

The 1922 committee of Conservative MP’s is currently holding talks with the conservative party board over formally declaring May the winner of the leadership race.

A statement is expected from their chairman Graham Brady at 17.00 and May is expected to make a public address as 18.00 with David Cameron stating this afternoon that he could step down as early as this Wednesday.
