Manchester has always had a buzzing comedy scene, from improv groups at one of the theaters spread throughout the city, to open mic nights and, most importantly, the cities fully-fledged comedy nights. One such night is coming up at Tiger Lounge with Nick Thune headlining the bill.
Organised by the folks at Group Therapy Comedy Club, who’s aim of a “comedy club run by comedy lovers, for comedy lovers” this Nick Thune gig looks to be the start of a flurry of fresh comedy nights taking place across Manchester.
If you’re not familiar with the man himself, Thune is a man of a multitude of comedic talents. The Seattle-born comic has appeared on The Tonight Show an impressive ten times, featured in a Comedy Central Presents Special, and released his debut album ‘Thick Nune’ on Comedy Central Records back in 2010. Not to mention his acting work in films such as Knocked Up and Unaccompanied Minors, or his appearances on Conan or The Late Show, which might mean a little less to us British comedy lovers, but is certainly a big deal across the pond.
Thune’s comedy style is focused around his interestingly dry delivery tone and deadpan wit, making his name with a set that incorporated a musical element in the form of delivering one liners over melodic guitar sounds played by Thune himself. However these aspects of the set have since been swapped for a more personal, and arguably more entertaining conversationally toned set.
Thune is currently in the UK’s spotlight with Netflix picking up his Nick Thune: Folk Hero. In an interview with The Skinny magazine he joked, “I’m curious to see, that first night, if people actually know who I am.” If you’re one of the people who don’t just yet, I implore you to give at least one of his sets a chance, if not the Netflix featured show, check out some of his work on YouTube.
