Piccadilly Gardens cordoned off following reports of a ‘suspicious package’

Piccadilly Gardens has been sealed off by the police following unconfirmed reports of a ‘suspicious package’.

Twitter users have shared photos from the scene showing a rucksack leaning against a tree and a heavy police presence in area, which is sealed off with police tape.

Manchester Metrolink has halted services operating in Piccadilly due to the “police incident”.

GMP have released the following statement: “A cordon is in place in Piccadilly Gardens after reports of a suspicious package were made.

“A man aged 26 has been detained by police and enquiries into the incident are ongoing. Updates will follow.”
