Students Raise Cash for Charity at the Great Manchester 10K Run

0 287

This year’s Great Manchester Run saw 35,000 runners hit the streets of the city centre on Sunday to take part in the 10k route. The run is Europe’s biggest 10k event, with over 300,000 runners taking part since it was established in 2003. Raising tens of millions of pounds for charity since it began, the event has grown ever more popular, with athletes, celebrities and novice runners all taking part in the run every year.

Taking the typical Mancunian blend of sun and rain in their stride, many of the runners dressed up for the occasion whilst others wore heart-felt emotional messages on their vests stating why they were taking part.

Lots of Manchester Metropolitan University (Manchester Met) students and staff joined the masses this year to raise money for various causes. Earlier this month, MMU Sport recognised Run Leaders and Manchester Met’s jogging club members for their unwavering hard work by awarding them free entry to the annual event.

Alex Larkworthy, an MA History student, ran with friends and raised £270.00 for mental health charity MIND. He said, “It was a fantastic day in Manchester for a wonderful occasion. I ran with two fellow alumni, Iron Man and Spider-Man. I am raising money for MIND, the mental health charity and will be looking to beat my time of 59:06 next year.”

You can still donate to Alex’s fundraising page here.

Ella Blackmoor, first year Textiles student at Manchester Met, also ran to raise money for the Christie Hospital. She said,”The atmosphere was so uplifting. It was really inspiring to see so many different people raising money for charity and supporting each other.”

The Great Manchester run took place on Sunday 22nd May. Find out more information and how to enter the 2017 run here.
