The MMU English Society are running their first fundraising event in aid of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, an organization dedicated to stamping out hate crime by working with police departments, the media and other charities and agencies.
Taking place on the ground floor of the Students’ Union on Monday 2nd November from 2pm – 4pm, the fundraiser will feature a bake sale and merchandise from the Sophie Lancaster Foundation will be available for purchase, with all proceeds going to charity.
Louis Brierley, English Society Secretary, said,
“As a society wish to raise awareness for this cause and generate funds to help their aims, which include teaching children in primary schools about diversity and discrimination.
“We have invited guest speakers including Sylvia Lancaster, PC Jo Green of the Hate Crimes Division, author Alan Gibbons, and educational consultant Rosie Marcus to MMU for this event.”
Louis added,
“On Sunday 11th October, BBC3 is airing ‘Black Roses: The Killing of Sophie Lancaster’, a film combining the poetry of Simon Armitage with the harrowing words of Sophie’s mother, Sylvia and we would like to encourage everyone to tune in.”
