Following the passing of iconic Stone Roses and Primal Scream Bassist Gary ‘Mani’ Mountfield, there have been growing calls for him to be immortalised in a way that reflects both his cultural impact and the deep affection shared between the musician and his home city.
GRIT Studios has answered the calls from fans, announcing plans for a mural in Failsworth, the area where Mani grew up.
GRIT Studios co-founder John Macaulay said: “The incredible response to Mani’s passing has shown just how deeply he was loved. This mural will be a way for fans to come together, pay tribute and create something very special for the community.”
The local no-profit arts organisation has launched a community fundraiser to cover the cost of the mural while also raising funds for Maggie’s, a charity close to Mani’s heart. The organisation supported his wife during cancer treatment.
The mural will be painted by Manchester-based street artist Pic.One.Art, who previously created the Oasis mural on the side of iconic Burnage record shop, Sifters Records. The mural’s location and design have been organised by Mani’s brother, Greg Mountfield.
Macaulay spoke of his personal connection with the bassist, which began in 2011 when they worked together in China. “Mani was one of the warmest, funniest and most generous people I’ve ever known. He had time for everyone,” he said.
“The work we did together in China over a decade ago genuinely changed the course of my life, and without Mani, GRIT Studios probably wouldn’t exist. He encouraged us, believed in us, and inspired us to think big.”
The idea for the mural was inspired in part by the eulogy delivered by Ian Brown at Manchester Cathedral, in which the Stone Roses frontman suggested erecting a “50–foot gold statue” in Mani’s honour.
Macualay added: “We loved Ian Brown’s beautiful words about Mani in Manchester Cathedral and his suggestion of a 50-foot gold statue! You never know – it might happen in the future, but for now we’ll focus on a mural.”
GRIT Studios hopes the artwork will become a permanent fixture in Failsworth, offering a lasting tribute to one of Manchester’s most beloved music legends.
