Manchester coffee lovers gathered at Altogether Otherwise on February 13th to celebrate the debut launch of Dial In magazine.
A passion project created by Manchester Met alumni Ania Klekot and Elliot Howard, Dial In is the newest addition to Manchester’s independent publishing scene, bringing a fresh voice to the city’s thriving coffee community and culture.
The focus of Dial In’s debut issue, titled ‘Star of the North’, are Leeds-based coffee roasters, North Star, who were on-hand to provide personalised coffee recommendations and samples, keeping attendees caffeinated (and decaffeinated) all evening with cups of their speciality grade coffee.
At the launch event, Matt from North Star said: “It’s an incredible event supporting a really great scene that’s got a really bright future. It’s been absolutely amazing to be featured in the first issue, we’re really grateful and it’s so exciting to be a part of.”
He added: “It’s really nice to see people come out in force to drink coffee of an evening – it shows how passionate people are and what an incredible scene that Manchester has for coffee and underground culture – it’s been fantastic to be a part of.”
The event was curated to feel as if you were stepping inside the magazine – coffee featured in the magazine itself was available to be sampled and prints were exhibited throughout the venue, making for an immersive and engaging experience.
Ania, co-founder of Dial In, said: “We loved having North Star brew up the actual coffee that we write about and seeing this idea in person on the day was honestly special. We wanted it to be an immersive space and get all of the readers to try the coffee we write about, especially if they’ve never tried it before, so Matt and Luke definitely delivered on the coffee front.”
Treats from independent Manchester bakeries Companio Bakery and Sticky Fingers were available to be paired with North Star’s delicious brews, which were enjoyed to a backdrop of live music from local DJ Dan Neal.
Co-founder Elliot said: “The launch was ace! For a cold, miserable Wednesday in the middle of February, the support was amazing. After all the worry and double, it’s so nice seeing it out there on the shelves next to magazines we used to read. It’s also given me the hunger to make this something really special and get on with the second issue.”
Ania added: “We’re so happy about it finally being out there, there’s only us two working on the project right now, so after several months, to finally see every single detail on paper in our hands was very rewarding. The reception we got at the launch was so positive and we are over the moon with the love we have received so far on our journey.”
