I was at a loss
when it came to monsters,
nights terrified me
as a child;
the rattle of windows,
the rustle of leaves
from sweeping winds
and their dancing
on my window pane
backlit by street lamps.
I was asthmad so easily
by the toxic fright of it.
In truth, I was as safe
as the house I was in,
built by dad years before;
but early frights created
a never shored up self.
