Cafes, pubs, restaurants and theatres will close from Friday night to tackle coronavirus, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said.

In the latest PM media briefing, Johnson announced the government is strengthening the measures to stop the spread of coronavirus.

He said, “We are telling cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants to close tonight as soon as they reasonably can and not reopen tomorrow.”

“We want you to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives,” he added.

Gyms and leisure centres will also be affected, where individuals are unable to practice social distancing. This does not include certain “outside areas”.

Johnson says despite these measure go against the freedom-loving instincts of British people, “we will get through this – we will get through it together and beat this virus”.

Boris Johnson added that takeaways would be excluded from the new measures, which come in to place from Friday 20th March.

The measures on closures will be reviewed on a monthly basis.
