Student Officers Make History As 2020/21 Winners Announced

With a turnout of 3,273 votes, MMUnified have been appointed the first non-male slate in over a decade at the 2020 Student Officer Elections.

The winners of the 2020 Student Officer Elections are Evelyn Sweeney (President), Bran Catron (Education Officer), America Fabiana Pardo-Gomez (Wellbeing Officer), Savannah Middleton (Societies and Development Officer) and Fabienne Robertson-Bennett (Sports Officer).

The slate was officially backed by Manchester Met’s Debating Society, HelloHackers Society, Cheer, the Rock Society, Nerds Society, Gamers, Big Change, Speech, Language and Communication Society, Polish Society, Future Entrepreneur, LGBT+ Society, MMU Conservatives, Uniboob, Politics and International Politics Society, Pole Dancing Society, Art Society, and MMU Taekwondo.

Every year student’s campaign to lead The Union and represent the views of students at Manchester Met.

Introducing the 2020 Student Officers

Student Officer President: Evelyn Sweeney

President: Evelyn Sweeney

Evelyn aims to:

  • Increase safety of students in Manchester and lobby for the Manchester City Council to ensure changes are made
  • Increase sustainability awareness at Manchester Met
  • Get misogyny recognised as a hate crime in Greater Manchester, as it is in Nottingham
  • Give a voice to estranged students, care leavers, carers and first generation students and communicate the help available to them
Student Education Officer: Bran Catron

Education Officer: Bran Catron

Bran aims to:

  • Get justification from lecturers for exams
  • Secure reimbursements for doctors notes
  • Make Lecture Capture available for all lectures
  • Stamp out homophobia in all faculties
Societies and Development Officer: Savannah Middleton

Societies and Development Officer: Savannah Middleton

Savannah aims to:

  • Improve room bookings
  • Introduce skill workshops to improve employability
  • Create a personalised development plan with each society, with check-ins throughout the year to provide support, if necessary.
Sports Officer: Fabienne Robertson-Benett

Sport Officer: Fabienne Robertson-Bennett

Fabienne aims to:

  • Increase accessibility and inclusivity for all sports and societies
  • Increase endurance improvement for sports injuries
  • Create an ‘open door surgery’ that provides each sports club an environment where they can bring up issues, with low-pressure
  • Promote sober socials, where people don’t feel excluded from teams by not drinking
Wellbeing Officer: America Fabiana Pardo-Gomez

Wellbeing Officer: America Fabiana Pardo-Gomez

America aims to ensure:

  • More talk, advice and accessibility to sexual health
  • Policies are be followed by landlords and a vetted list for housing around Manchester
  • Cheaper travel for commuting students
  • Better systems are in place for supporting students’ mental health

The officers will officially start their posts in July 2020, where they will represent the voice of the students at Manchester Met, and set the direction and goals of The Union for the year.
