2016 was a good year for literature. Many brilliant pieces were published: J.K. Rowling returned with the script for Harry Potter and The Cursed Child, Colson Whitehead delighted the world with The Underground Railroad, Bridget Jones returned with a baby and other surprises adorned the bookshelves. So far, 2017 promises not to disappoint. Here is a list of exciting books set to be published during the year.
After the acclaimed bestseller The Girl On The Train, there are big expectations for Paula Hawking’s upcoming novel, Into the Water. The thriller centres around the investigation that ensues after the discovery of the bodies of a mother and teenage girl in a river. Whether or not Into the Water, set to be published on 9th May, will match The Girl On The Train’s success is a mystery for readers to solve.
The internationally acclaimed writer of Norwegian Wood and Kafka On The Shore is back with a new novel.
Men Without Women was announced a couple of years ago, however, it will be finally released this year on 9th May. The book is a collection of seven short stories following the lives of various solitary men. Men Without Women promises to be marked by the same witty humour and rich observations that have made Murakami one of the most distinguished contemporary authors.
Master of horror Stephen King has written over fifty novels and hundreds of short-stories. His latest work Sleeping Beauties is a collaboration with his son, Owen King. Little is known about Sleeping Beauties; there’s not an exact publication date yet, but King revealed that it will be set in a women’s prison in West Virginia.
The author of American Gods and The Ocean at the End Of The Lane returns to his source material in his new book, in which he “fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc.” Beginning with the genesis of the legendary nine words, Gaiman explores the deities, dwarves, giants and Ragnarok, whilst staying loyal to the original material. Gaiman gives the mythology his touch of witty prose and compelling characterizations. Norse Mythology will be published on 7th February.
Viet Thanh Nguyen wrote one of the most acclaimed novels of 2015, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction among various awards. As a result, the eyes of the literary world are on his next novel The Refugees. It is a collection of multiple stories written over a period of twenty years, exploring topics such as immigration, identity, love and family. The Refugees is highly relevant in a time in which these themes have created heated debates over the world. It will be released on 7th February.
