In the world of student radio, rarely do you find a show that has set its ambitions loftily above the confines of the lo-fi studio available to Hive Radio shows in the Manchester Met Student Union.
Enter Sam Richards and Harry Freebre, co-presenters of Hive Live, currently the only show on Hive Radio dedicated to MMU Sport societies. After developing the show into a blend of sports, chat and music during the first season of the show last year, the pair return to the airwaves in a new 5-7pm slot on Wednesdays and are planning big things for their second season.
Relaunching the show on September 20, Hive Live will be broadcasting their second show of the season live from the Legends’ Suite at the Etihad Stadium and interviewing a star studded list of MMU Sport scholars who have gone on to achieve handsomely in their chosen sporting fields after graduation.
Organised by former Team GB Water Polo coach Jerome Reed, who led the MMU Water Polo team to an undefeated season last year, the event promises to be a celebration of the homegrown talent that Manchester Met has produced over the years.
Having built strong links with various societies last year including Taekwondo, Squash, Rugby, Water Polo and the MMU Canoe Club, Sam and Harry were delighted at the invite to cover the Etihad festivities with themselves being the first to admit that what started as a hobby for a bit of a laugh has grown into a popular platform for MMU sports societies.
“We never thought people would actually be asking us to come on the show,” Media student Harry told us. “We’ve had some great opportunities come up from doing something that we enjoy and we’re always happy to get other interested people involved.”
The show has proved it’s more than just a typical sports show though, with guests ranging from up and coming indie bands to a woman who has dedicated her life to studying moss.
“Some of the guests are just completely out of the blue,” sports management third year Sam laughed, “literally anything can happen on the show so we just roll with it.”
With a weekly playlist consisting of the best in new indie music played alongside a selection of of classics spanning from the 1960’s onwards, Hive Live truly has something for everyone.
