Running continues to grow in popularity, with data from the most recent Sport England survey showing that it’s the second most popular activity in the UK.
Covid has brought a culture that goes far beyond just running for health and wellness, it’s birthed a whole new beast. Our feeds are full of Parkruns, personal best times on Strava and a range of paraphernalia that apparently needs to be purchased: running vests; nose clips; electrolyte gels (the list is endless). Not to mention fitness influencers normalising running ridiculous distances.
It all seems like a lot to take in, but all you really need are a reliable pair of sturdy shoes and a group to run with. After all, an encouraging word from new friends and the potential for a post-run pint are always the best motivators to exercise.
Whether you’re a novice runner or a seasoned athlete here are a few inclusive, free running clubs in Greater Manchester to get you on your feet.
Slow Run Club

This beginner-friendly group prides itself on being for all runners, no matter what ability.
With three different locations across Manchester on different days (city centre, Didsbury and Wilmslow) each run operates the same: a 3km loop with the option to do another lap if you feel up for it. The group always has a runner at the back to make sure all participants are supported. Slow Run Club’s no-pressure approach to taking breaks is a great way to begin your running journey.
Manchester Frontrunners

This run club with over 150 members prides itself on being LGBTQ+ friendly and is a branch of the larger network of running clubs called International Front Runners.
The Manchester Frontrunners welcome all people of any ability, whether they’re training for a race or just wanting to meet new people and get fit. They meet at different spots in the city centre each week depending on the day.

A relatively new club that is gaining traction fast, this group is based in Failworth and aims to empower women to get out there no matter what their running ability might be. They host women only runs three times a week with the most taxing run of 8k being at the end of the week. So, if you’re wanting to get into your running era, join their WhatsApp to get involved.
Wild Trial Manchester

If you love getting out of the city and amongst nature, this gang of wilderness runners might be for you. Wild Trail Manchester is a run club with a focus on trial running; they meet multiple times a month at Greater Manchester locations like Chorlton Water Park and Altrincham for training, as well as regular planned trips to the Peaks.
The group prides itself on being beginner-friendly, so if you’ve wanted to try trail running but haven’t given it a chance, starting with a group of experienced runners is the best way to start.

The group has regular collaborators that sponsor the event runs, so there’s always free stuff up for grabs. Notable brands that have been involved are Redbull and Holland & Barratt.
All events end with a social at a bar or restaurant, so if you want the chance to meet new friends while you get fit, get yourself involved.
