On Thursday 28th May The Palace Hotel Manchester, played host to the third annual Humanities, Languages, and Social Sciences (HLSS) End of Year Ball. The night was filled with glitz and glamour as students and staff attended the ‘Gatsby’-themed ball saw 275 students and staff attend. There was everything one could imagine, from the setting of the Palace, lindy hop dancers and a 1920s-style jazz band, not to mention a wonderful three course dinner.
The evening had plenty going on with a drinks reception in the room followed by the main events in the grand room. John Byrne, Languages, Linguistics and TESOL Student Experience Support Tutor and co-organiser of the ball, opened the event with an introduction from himself and Dean of the Faculty Dr Sharon Handley. Many students won prizes in the surprise raffle which included a spa day at the Midland Hotel, Chill Factore vouchers, Jump Nation vouchers, a helicopter flight over Manchester, Kindle Fires and two Parklife festival tickets. Many revellers had fun in the Photo Booth, which had props of all kinds to throw on and have a laugh with.
The ball this year was organised by the IDEA team along with help and input from students within the faculty. Main organiser, Rachel Bruce, of the IDEAs Office, said:
“Organising the HLSS End of Year Ball was so much fun. We had some fantastic students and staff on board the planning committee, and we collaborated on theme ideas, menu tasting, the after party and entertainment. It was a great night, which was enjoyed by all. We were lucky to get some fantastic prizes for the students too, including a spa day at the MacDonald Hotel, and a one night stay for two at The Palace Hotel, generously donated by the two hotels. We can’t wait to organise next year’s ball!”
The party continued at the classy venue of Black Dog Ballroom NWS who were also celebrating their third birthday at New Wakefield Street, with drinks and cupcakes for those who wanted to dance the night away. George Flanagan, Head of the History Society said:
“The ball exceeded every expectation I had. It’s been a spectacular evening and has been one of the highlights of the academic year for the faculty.”
On the whole the evening was one most would not forget, especially for those who are graduating this summer. For the rest of us we look forward to what will be in store at next year’s event.
