As part of our new series In Print: Celebrating Print Culture in Manchester, we spotlight new independent coffee magazine, Dial In.
A new independent coffee magazine is set to launch this month, celebrating coffee culture and bringing a fresh voice to Manchester’s ever-evolving scene.
Founded by Manchester Metropolitan University alumni Anna Klekot and Elliot Howard, Dial In magazine is a passion project that puts a spotlight on speciality coffee roasters. Each issue will focus on a single roaster, bringing readers an in-depth look at the craft, culture and community behind their work.
MA Multimedia Journalism graduate and co-founder Anna said: “We wanted to create a magazine that’s sort of a niche. There was a gap in the market for something like this, and we both like coffee, so we wanted to collaborate on this together.”
The magazine aims to appeal to both coffee enthusiasts and professionals alike, and is set to feature a collection of illustrations, industry insights, recipes, and interviews with “people that you might not have come across because they don’t work in coffee shops,” says co-founder and BA photography graduate Elliot.
In an era dominated by digital content, the duo are dedicated to keeping print alive. “For us, it’s about trying to keep things in print; I’ve always wanted to do in-print, I’ve been a big fan of exhibitions all throughout my degree,” says Elliot.
Anna adds: “We want to prove that print is not dead. Every time I say that I’m writing a creative print magazine, everyone’s always like: ‘No one buys print magazines anymore’, but for people, it’s still very much alive, especially here in Manchester – there’s such a big scene for it.”
Even before its first issue has hit the shelves, Dial In has already caught the attention of a distributor – something Elliot sees as “a testament to the enduring appeal of print”.
To celebrate its debut, Dial In is hosting a launch party for Issue 1, ‘Star of the North’, at Altogether Otherwise on Hanover Street, Manchester, on Wednesday 12th February, 2025, from 6pm to 10pm.
The event promises an immersive experience, complete with coffee tastings, print exhibitions, and live discussions.
Elliot says: “It’s quite an immersive launch party, it’s almost like a live installation as well. We’re trying to make the launch feel as if you’re actually walking through the pages of the magazine.”
On launch night, copies of the magazine will be available, and guests will be able to sample chocolate and coffee featured in the magazine. In Anna’s words: “If you’re reading this, you’re invited.”
