Manchester Met has announced a new Vice Chancellor, Antony Jenkins CBE, to succeed Lord Peter Mandelson.
Antony Peter Jenkins CBE will serve as Manchester Met’s highest ambassador and ceremonial head, aiming to develop the university’s mission, vision and values.
From 1st January, 2025 Jenkins will succeed Lord Mandelson, who has held the Vice Chancellor position since April 2016.
Lord Mandelson said: “It has been a real honour to serve as the Chancellor of Manchester Met and I pass on my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Antony for when he steps into the role.”
Antony Jenkins is a British business executive who founded and has been the CEO of 10x Future Technologies since 2016. He was the inaugural Chair of the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education and the Group Chief Executive of Barclays for three years.
He has advocated for the evolution of degree apprenticeships, which is now a distinguished feature of Manchester Met’s educational programme.
In 2021, Jenkins was bestowed the honour of Commander of the British Empire (CBE) during Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday honours for his contribution to the business industry. He was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Business from Manchester Met to acknowledge his contributions to banking, apprenticeships and technical education.
Jenkins said: “I have witnessed personally and professionally the power of education to change lives. It is, therefore, with great pride that I have accepted the opportunity to serve as Chancellor of one of the largest and most applied universities in the UK.
“The University has an outstanding track record on research with impact and the promotion of social mobility, and I am greatly looking forward to working with staff, students, and alumni in my new role.”
Manchester Metropolitan is one of the UK’s largest and most diverse institutions, with 43,000 students, over 5,000 employees, and a global alumni community of 340,000 people from more than 170 countries.
The university was founded in 1824, and celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2024, marking 200 years of advancement and creativity through excellent research and education.
