If you find yourself with some free time during Student Volunteering Week (23rd-27th February), then head over to the Humanity, Languages and Social Science Faculty’s (HLSS) ‘Faculty Enrichment Fair’. Taking place in Manchester Metropolitan University’s (MMU) Geoffrey Manton Building on Tuesday 24th February, the event will run from 10am until 2pm.
Offering over 21 stalls, the Fair is a fun-filled chance for students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, to find out more about what is currently happening in the HLSS faculty. Opportunities on offer include the chance to join the faculty’s many societies such as those run by the English, History and Politics departments, and to gain more information about work experience abroad, job placements and volunteering opportunities, such as supporting the Manchester Children’s Book Festival. Lisa Bach, MMU Make A Difference Officer, told Humanity Hallows,
“The HLSS Faculty Enrichment Fair aims to promote the various opportunities the Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences Faculty has to offer its students as your course is more than what you do in the classroom. These opportunities range from faculty and university-wide to student led ones such as departmental societies.”
Also on hand on the day will be representatives from the MMU Student Press Office with advice about editorial, commissioned writer and social media roles and Kate Johnson, the faculty’s Postgraduate Student Experience tutor who organises social events for both national and international postgraduates enabling them to gain maximum enjoyment from their university experience. Kate says,
“The Faculty Enrichment Fair is a timely opportunity for me to promote the faculty’s commitment to enhancing the student experience, specifically highlighting the services for postgraduates. These range from one-to-one support and guidance sessions to linking up with undergraduates to build a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate study. Building a supportive community amongst the postgraduates is one of my priorities. I hope to meet as many students as possible at the Fair and to chat to them informally about what they would like to achieve while they are at MMU.”
As well as offering valuable information and the chance for students to enhance their CVs, the enrichment fair will be host to a wide range of fun interactive games which students can enjoy in exchange for a small donation, activities including Wheel of Fortune on the ‘Make a Difference’ stall and quizzes that offer the chance to win prizes. There will also be a bakery stall offering a delicious variety of cakes and biscuits. All proceeds from these stalls will go to Readwell, the charity that improves life for children who have to endure repeated or prolonged stays in hospital with professional story-tellers and free books. Tickets for the end-of-year ‘HLSS Ball 2015’ will also be available to buy on the day.
