As the new semester gets underway and Fresher Week starts to feel like a distant memory, we’re keen to shine a light on student societies and how you can get involved.
Joining a student society is one of the best ways to make new friends and relax after your studies. There are tons of great societies to choose from at Manchester Met and aAh! will be highlighting some of our favourites.
We caught up with MMU Book Club to learn more about what they do, and how you can get involved.
Tell us about your society…
Our society creates a safe, inclusive and fun space for bookworms to come together and mingle. We aim to create an environment where we can share our common interests on books, movie adaptations, artistic opinions or just anything through our social events. This social space helps with creating a common ground to develop new friendships and gaining some helpful tips for adjusting to the new ‘uni’ lifestyle.
The books club’s theme for each month is decided by members as part of a monthly vote. During October, we looked into the world of ‘Fantasy’, with book recommendations including The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros and The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean.
When and where do you meet?
We typically meet monthly at various locations on campus grounds to discuss books and themes we’ve read throughout the month. However, we love to throw other types of fun events into the mix. In the past, we’ve organised game or movie nights, quizzes and raffles. So keep a lookout to find an event that’s perfect for you!
Where can students find out more?
You can follow MMU Bookclub Society on our Instagram @mmubook_club, our Discord, and our society webpage on the Student Union website. Membership costs £2 for the year, and you can sign up online.
