Fashion and Lifestyle journalist Latifa Akhtar continues her new series to shine a spotlight on South Asian creatives in the fashion industry. Next up, Latifa speaks to Fashion Design student Amrita Mukherjee.
Amrita Mukherjee is a fashion design student at Manchester Metropolitan University. As well as being a finalist of the Louise X in Sustainable Couture Competition in 2021, Mukherjee has also gone on to win the Hattie Stewart X Kickers Competition.
With an interest in sustainability, her designs reflect an eco-friendly aesthetic, with pieces suited to all age groups and body sizes, and garments that can be styled and worn in more than one way. We speak to Mukherjee and got to understand how she is finding her course, who her fashion inspirations are, and her thoughts on the fashion industry as a Manchester Met student.
Can you tell us about yourself?
I’m currently on a placement year, but I study fashion design and technology at Manchester Met. I love designing, the colours, prints and patterns… kind of being a trendsetter and looking for newness in the market.
Who are your fashion inspirations?
My inspirations would be Dior, Monique Lhuillier, Simone Rocha, Jenny Packham.
Are there any improvements you would like to see in the fashion Industry
Probably making luxury fashion more affordable with the current market situation and also creating more uniqueness in the market.
What advice would you have wanted to know before coming into the fashion industry?
Advice I would have liked to know is probably staying true to yourself and your ideas and pushing them forward if you believe in them.
What advice would you give to other fashion students?
I can’t really think of any advice right now, as I feel I’m still learning but probably something I’d say is try and learn something new every day.
