Manchester Met’s arts and culture student magazine, aAh! has released a new “FRESHERS” themed print issue to kickstart the academic year and welcome new and returning students.
The FRESHERS Issue is aimed at students who want to make the most of their time in the city and includes a range of stories to help keep them informed, reassured, and entertained during their first semester.
“I wrote an article for the magazine about helping students with homesickness at university,” said student journalist Anna Torrence. “I have never worked with a magazine before so I thoroughly enjoyed getting a brand new experience. I enjoyed having my own creative freedom in writing my article and collaborating with others.”
This issue includes a range spotlight pieces on the best Manchester has to offer, providing lists of events, useful contacts, opportunities, and advice on where to eat.
Features cover themes such as overcoming homesickness, how to avoid the trap of Buy Now Pay Later schemes, and ways to up your sustainability on a budget.
Student journalist and editor Elizabeth Fulham, said: “Contributing to the magazine has let me find my true style of writing and has given me so much more confidence. Now journalism is definitely on my list of potential career choices.”
Other student contributors expressed the value of their experience, and their enjoyment of being involved in such a project. MA publishing student and magazine editor, Jenny Li, said: “There are lots of skills that students can learn by being part of the magazine, especially those considering a future in journalism or editorial, as well as having creative writing opportunities.
“It’s also a chance to connect with the student community and grow your network.”
aAh! Magazine is Manchester Metropolitan University’s official arts and culture magazine. They aim to create a space for student volunteers to be creative and have their voices heard, while developing skills in journalism, editing, graphic design, publishing, marketing, events and more.
