On Wednesday 1st October, Humanities Languages and Social Sciences (HLSS) academic societies held a hugely successful village fair which saw them raise an impressive £465.11 in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
The History, Criminology/Sociology and English societies combined their efforts, selling cakes to raise money for their chosen charity. Staff and students throughout the HLSS departments gave great support, baking cakes to be sold, playing coffee and cake themed games, buying second-hand books and generously donating money throughout the day.
Helena Tomlinson, Secretary of the History Society explained, “Macmillan is a cause that means a great deal to me. The Macmillan nurses have been a great support for all of my family. They do a fantastic job and are a wonderful charity that I have wanted to support for a long time.” Chair of the History Society, Ruth Clare added, “Today’s event has had a great turnout by staff and students alike. It has been a fun day with cakes galore! I have loved being part of such a positive event. MMU has done us proud today.”
The success of this first charity event of the society calendar and their combined grand total of £465.11 is a great start to the year. Leonie Moore, Student Experience Support Tutor, was impressed with the commitment of the students and the support shown to them, “MMU Staff and students were as generous as ever and managed to raise a lot of money for an excellent cause.”
With such an impressive start, the societies have proved themselves to be a powerful force to be reckoned with and the sky is clearly the limit for them.
Macmillan is a charity which provides support to people suffering from cancer. They believe that ‘no one should face cancer alone’ and provide a constant source of support giving sufferers and their families the energy and inspiration to help them take back control of their lives.
