Film fan excitement went viral when the trailer for the next chapter in the Jurassic series, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, was finally released on Friday. This is something that fans all around the world have been waiting for since the release of the fourth film Jurassic World in 2015. A fourteen year wait for Jurassic World, after the third instalment appeared to close the franchise, created queues longer than a T-Rex at the box office. Fans were left gobsmacked, amazed and full of questions. Is that the end? Surely not…
The trailer is full of explosions, dino-carnage and running; everything that makes a Hollywood blockbuster successful. But the thing that people had been waiting for was the comeback of the old cast, none of which were in Jurassic World, except for B.D. Wong, who played Dr. Henry Wu, the young lab scientist.
Back in the latest film is heartthrob Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum. Remembered for his laugh and unnecessary bare chest, he certainly pleased the audience.
Fallen Kingdomtrailer gives you all the action in under three minutes, but with no spoilers! A particular treat for fans is the easter-eggs. Throwbacks and intratextual references are important for fans, especially after a long wait since the original instalments. In the film world, carrying on nostalgia and tradition is vital, just like carrying on the legacy that brought childhood adventure for many.
Some of the significant easter-eggs noticed in the trailers include the scene where three characters hide behind the gyro-sphere near a tree trunk as dinosaurs run over them when the volcano explodes. A clear reference to the first film when Alan, Tim and Lex duck under the tree trunk as a flock of Gallimimus run over them, before the T-Rex makes an appearance.
Another great one is a throwback to the iconic scene when the kids, Tim and Lex, seek refuge in a restaurant and see a silhouette of a Velociraptor behind the mural. This is at the start of the trailer when a ‘Compy’, the tiny, green dinosaurs from Jurassic Park 2, poses as a toy in the shattered shops of the abandoned park.
These all give an insight to how great this summer blockbuster is going to be, but the one thing people are still debating before the film’s release is… will this be the end? The original Jurassic Park novel by Michael Crichton, where Spielberg drew inspiration from, ends with the island being destroyed.
With the shots of the erupting volcano and behind the scenes First Look interview with Chris Pratt for Hollywood Streams, it may be that Fallen Kingdom will be bringing the Jurassic legacy to a close. Pratt says: “We’re literally blowing up the island”, but with the surprising storytelling techniques the directors of the franchise use, it’s an open debate whether it’s the end or not!
Fallen Kingdom is set for release on June 22nd, 2018, but until then, see how it will compete with other new releases this year!
