After a packed a hectic summer on the festival circuit, Goldfrapp start their eight-date UK tour in Glasgow on Halloween and head to Manchester Academy on Friday 3rd November.
The tour will promote Goldfrapp’s seventh studio album, Silver Eye, which was released in March this year. ‘Anymore’, the opening track and first single from the album, is a return to the synth-pop of previous albums like Supernature and Head First. Other tracks, like ‘Moon in Your Mouth’, evoke the ethereal style, which marked the duo’s debut, in 2000 – Felt Mountain.
The album is produced by Goldfrapp, although co-production credits include Bobby Krlic, aka The Haxan Cloak and John Congleton, who won a Grammy for producing St. Vincent‘s self-titled album.
Alison Goldfrapp has again taken on art direction and photography for the record sleeve, with the design by artist and filmmaker Mat Maitland.
Previous album covers depicted the singer in Bohemian vamp mode (Black Cherry, Supernature), and Pierrot clown costumes for Seventh Tree and in black and white, art film star style for Tales of Us.
This chameleon quality is reflected in Goldfrapp’s reinvention of themselves both musically and visually – something which makes their live shows different each time.
The sleeve of Silver Eye features a mysterious flame-haired woman. The inner sleeve includes photographs of a sandy and a rocky landscape, which could be the lunar surface. Will Gregory, the other half of Goldfrapp, gazes out, in sunglasses, into the distance.
In 2013, Alison Goldfrapp curated an exhibition at the Lowry, Salford Quays. The exhibits reflected her interest in the darker side of fairy tales and folklore and metamorphosis. There were artworks by Marcel Dzama, photo-collagist John Stezaker, surrealist painter Leonora Carrington, children’s illustrator Jan Pienkowski and Lotte Reiniger.
Apart from Manchester, the UK leg of the European tour includes Leeds, Leicester, Birmingham, Brighton and Bristol. It rounds off in at London’s O2 Academy Brixton, on 10th November.
