Greater Manchester will today find out who has won the race to become the first ever-elected Mayor.

Voters across the region went to the polls yesterday to elect a mayor who will be responsible for over £1 billion in public spending and who will influence a whole range of policy for the region. Over 1,400 polling stations were open from 7am until 10.00pm yesterday.

Last night all the votes were verified from the boroughs that make up Greater Manchester and the official counting of the votes will take place today at Manchester Central at 12pm. The turnout has been announced as 29%.

Eight candidates are vying for the votes and the Labour Party frontrunner Andy Burnham wrapped up his day in his home town of Leigh last night thanking his “loyal team” for supporting him in his bid to become the new mayor.

Time will tell whether former Chancellor George Osbourne’s promise of a “northern powerhouse” will be backed up by money but, for now, the candidates are optimistic about the role and the chance we have in Greater Manchester to make our voices heard in Westminster.
