Tuesday 13th December was the first night of The 1975’s UK tour in their home town and Manchester Arena was buzzing with fans anxiously waiting to get a glimpse of the four piece. This epic homecoming gig opened with ‘the 1975’, the first track from the band’s latest album I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it. They then went straight into ‘Love me’ also from the album.
The band had a 24 song set-list that absolutely astonished each member of the crowd with each and every song. Matty Healy held his own as a superb front man, dancing away to tracks whilst drinking red wine and thanking the audience. He also thanked his parents and brother, who were in the crowd, before saying, “Dreams really do come true,” drawing attention to the enormity of being able to perform in this venue in his home town.
The band staging was extremely aesthetically pleasing, with four big blocks of light standing behind the band as well as a huge wall of colour behind those blocks. Above, there were three squares of light shining down onto them. This effect created brilliant shadowing and made the stage look beautiful.
During the encore, Matty, after a quick outfit change, was brought to tears. When singing ‘Medicine’ the crowd pulled out their phones and lit up the venue, making the front man take a step back and appreciate what he was seeing. The band ended on fan favourites ‘Chocolate’ and, finally, ‘The Sound’, leaving everyone yearning for more and frantically checking for the next tour date.
