Situated on Higher Cambridge Street in the ever-growing All Saints campus is Manchester Met’s Student Union, a building busting with student activity and commotion every single day of the week. Just recently, the Union was the centre of many events that took place during Welcome Week 2016, including the Union Rocks festival and the hugely popular two-day Freshers Fair.
Every week, the Union offers a variety of different events and socials to suit everyone’s tastes and to help students meet new people and make new friends. The list of weekly events on offer include:
Strangled Cats Karaoke Club
Every Tuesday 8pm – 2am
The Union Bar
I Love Wednesday
Every Wednesday 10pm – 2am
The Union, Conference Room
Salutation Pub Quiz
Every Thursday 8pm – 11pm
The Salutation Pub
The Exchange ft. Guest DJ
Every Saturday 10pm – 3am
The Union Bar
Union Smartphone Quiz
Every Sunday 8pm –12am
The Union Bar
There’s a huge range of facilities and plenty of rooms for societies to book out during the evenings. If you’re after some down time after lectures you can play table tennis and have a go on the table football machines and snooker tables. These are generally set up in the main hall, and are great for when students want to relax, have some fun and meet new people.
The building also has its own bar and kitchen, which includes a varied menu and students can order food there between 10am-late during the week. A projector screen is also set on the main wall in the bar and regularly shows the latest football games for students to watch. For any coffee lovers, the Union also has a Starbucks where people can order a range of delicious coffees, hot chocolates and desserts to satisfy their hunger.
If Starbucks isn’t your thing, just around the corner from the union is the Salutation Pub, which is owned by Manchester Met. Here, students can relax and order traditional pints or drinks as well as order food from a traditional pub menu. The Salutation is also known for pub quizzes and brunch sessions, so keep an eye out for when the next one will take place.
If that wasn’t enough, the Union even has a shop which is filled with everything from meals and snacks, to notebooks and art equipment – anything you may need to pick up quickly. Everything is reasonably priced and students can either pay by cash, card or with their Met cards. If students are interested in volunteering, the Union also offers a variety of volunteering opportunities to suit everyone, which are fun to do and look great on a CV.
With so much on offer at the Union, every student will be able to find something that they enjoy and it’s easy to understand why it’s one of the best aspects of Manchester Metropolitan University.
