Two people were injured yesterday when the roof of Manchester’s Victoria Railway Station collapsed. Reports and eye witnesses say that the event happened during heavy rain and that gallons of water fell onto travellers on the platforms. The passengers affected were taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary.
Despite Northern Rail spending approximately £44 million on a station upgrade last year, it seems that several panels of the new roof were not able to withstand the pressure of the day’s heavy rain.
A Northern Rail statement said, “It has not disrupted the station and services are running as normal.Two customers are being seen by paramedics. They are not seriously injured. No platforms are closed.”
An eye witness reported, “People were shocked, they were stood around wondering what else would fall from the roof.”
Other parts of the station were also sealed off after it appeared that several other panels were also starting to buckle under the pressure. Services are believed to be running as normal but any passengers due to travel can check for disruptions on the National Rail Enquiries website.
