Five police officers have been confirmed dead and seven others injured in a late evening shooting in Dallas.
The peaceful protest took a turn for the worst as gunfire broke out at 8.45pm while hundreds of people gathered to protest against the fatal police shootings of two men in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and St Paul, Minnesota.
Police were attacked by at least two snipers, an attack which the media says may have been, in some form, pre-planned. Three suspects, two men and a woman, have since been apprehended, with another being said to have been killed during the standoff by explosives carried by a police robot. The suspects in custody are said to be refusing to co-operate with the authorities.
It has also been noted that one civilian has been injured with a shot to the leg after protecting her children. She is recovering in hospital.
Motives behind the shootings are unclear but it has been revealed this afternoon by the local authorities that one of the gunmen who carried out the sniper attack did so because he was apparently upset at recent fatal police shootings of black men. The man apparently said that his aim was to kill white police officers and has claimed to have been working alone.
