MMU Sport scholar Jamie Webb has had plenty to celebrate recently after winning a gold medal in the 1500m at the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) outdoor track championships.
Jamie, who is also studying for a chemistry degree at Manchester Met, has excelled at sport since he came to the university three years ago, his 2016 gold in the 1500m following a win in the 800m last year.
“I’m delighted to win again, especially over 1500m as it was my first championship at the distance.
“We thought it would be fun to try to win the 1500m after the 800m last year, and had come off a bit more of an endurance base off the back of the indoors so thought I stood a good chance!”
21-year-old Jamie praised the support he has received from the MMU Sport team. As well as supporting him financially, the team have also given him advice on nutrition, strength and conditioning which Jamie believes has enabled him to achieve his full potential as an athlete.
“My time at university has been my transition from an average athlete to what will hopefully be a professional level this summer.”
Jamie now has big plans to continue his sporting success. As well as completing his chemistry degree this summer, he is also hoping to qualify for this year’s Rio Olympics. In order to qualify, Jamie will be travelling to the British Championships in Birmingham in June.
