If you’re a classic horror movie fan and you missed last weeks double bill of Scream and Fright Night, never fear, this week brings more of the same. This weeks theme is Dracula, with a double bill of two of the classic adaptations of the British gothic tale. The double bill will take place on both Saturday and Sunday nights, so there’s no excuse for missing out either.
First up is 1992’s Bram Stokers Dracula, starring Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins and Keanu Reeves. A faithful adaptation of the original source material, director Francis Ford Coppola has been praised for creating arguably the best cinematic representation of Dracula of all time. It follows the tortured tale of Dracula travelling from his native lands of Transylvania to London in an attempt to seduce his long lost love, Mina Harker.
It’s followed by 1966’s Dracula: Prince of Darkness. Starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee it offers a chance to see some of the most critically acclaimed casting of all time. It’s also a perfect example of the Hammer Horror movies that continue to inspire generations of horror movies today. A sequel to 1958’s Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness is set 10 years after Count Dracula was destroyed. Four British tourists find themselves guests at Dracula’s castle and his plot for resurrection begins.
This week will also feature introductory talks from horror experts to fill you in on the background of the movies before you view them. This week your host will be Dr Sorcha Ní Fhlainn a lecturer in Film Studies and American Literature Manchester Metropolitan University.
Tickets for each weeks movies will be available for £12 on either of the nights or £10 if pre-ordered before. The double bills kick off at 7.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
