Cinema Spotlight: AMC Horror Special – Scream and Fright Night

1 916

By Jack Holmes

If you’re a classic horror movie fan and you missed last weeks double bill of From Dusk Till Dawn and The Evil Dead, never fear, this week brings more of the same. This weeks loose theme revolves around the teen horror, with Scream followed by the original 1985 version of Fright Night. The double bill will take place on both Saturday and Sunday nights, so there’s no excuse for missing out either.

Scream is up first, the American slasher movie directed by the iconic Wes Craven. When a horror movie inspired killer stalks the sleepy streets of Woodsboro, no one is safe. Revered for it’s perfect blend of irony, self-reference and wry social commentary, Scream has been credited as managing to reinvigorate the slasher film for modern cinema.

It’s followed by the 1985 original Fright Night, which is still praised today for combining thrills and humour in this ghostly tale about a man living next to a vampire. The classic has gone on to produce a direct sequel, and a remake that was also followed up with a sequel, showing off the longevity of the original cult classic.

This week will also feature introductory talks from horror experts to fill you in on the background of the movies before you view them. Saturday will be introduced by Dr. Sorcha Ní Fhlainn a lecturer in Film Studies and American Literature as well as the reviews editor for Gothic Studies. While Sunday will feature Chris Griffiths, the director of the Fright Night Documentary ‘You’re So Cool Brewster’.

Tickets for each weeks movies will be available for £12 on either of the nights or £10 if pre-ordered before. The double bills kick off at 7.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
